2016: Debut and first musical successes
On June 29, 2016, the group was officially introduced by YG Entertainment. They are the first YG girl group after 2NE1 in seven years. Their debut single, Square One, was released on August 8, 2016. The single's songs, Whistle and Boombayah, were written and produced by Teddy Park and peaked at number one and number two on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart. Previously, only Psy and Big Bang were able to do this. The single Whistle debuted at #1 on the Gaon charts in August 2016. The band also enjoyed success on China's largest music service, QQ Music.

On August 14, 2016, the quartet made their debut appearance on SBS' music program Inkigayo. On August 27 and September 11, Blackpink won Inkigayo with their single Whistle and at the time became the girl group to win at 13 days in the shortest time since their debut on a music program.

On November 1, 2016, her second single Square Two was released, featuring lead singles Playing with Fire and Stay. The songs were produced by Teddy Park, R.Tee and Seo Won Jin. With Playing with Fire they again reached number one on the Billboard World Digital Songs Chart. In South Korea, Playing With Fire peaked at number three and Stay at number ten.

Blackpink won several newcomer awards in major Korean music award shows within the first five months. Billboard also named Blackpink "one of the best new K-pop groups of 2016."

2017: As If It's Your Last and debut in Japan
In January 2017, it was announced via Blackpink's official Instagram account that their fans are called BLINK. In the summer of 2017, performances in Japan and the release of an EP on August 8 were announced.

On June 22, the single As If It's Your Last was released, which mixes house, reggae and moombahton genres. The video had already more than 10 million views after 17 hours and more than 100 million views within 46 days. It was the video of a Korean girl group that reached this number in the shortest possible time. It peaked at number one on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart after one day.

On July 20, 2017, Blackpink held their first concert at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo in front of 14,000 people. This was offset by a demand for 200,000 tickets. On August 30, 2017 their first EP Blackpink was released in Japan

2018: Blackpink House and Square Up

An episode of Blackpink House has been released on YouTube, Naver and V Live every Saturday at 9am KST since January 6, 2018 and also broadcast by JTBC2 and Olleh TV. A total of twelve episodes were released.

A re-release of their Blackpink EP called Re:BLACKPINK was released on March 28th and includes Japanese and Korean versions of the original songs. It also includes their music videos, footage of their live performances and a special interview.

On May 28, the group put their first official lightstick up for sale. The hammer shaped glow stick has two pink hearts made of silicone on either side of a black handle. It was designed by the members themselves. If you press a button, both hearts light up continuously. Pressing the button again activates the reaction light function, with which the light reacts to bass sounds in the environment. In addition, the staff can make a squeaking sound as soon as this function is activated and you hit something with the hammer.

On June 15 Blackpink released their first mini album called Square Up. The mini-album contains the single Ddu-Du Ddu-Du and the songs Forever Young, Really and See U Later. The single Ddu-Du Ddu-Du charted at number 17 on the Official Single Trending Chart and number 78 on the UK Official Singles Chart. They are the first Korean girl group to have a single chart in the UK. The video for Ddu-Du Ddu-Du ranked as the fastest video by a Korean music group with 300 million views after 69 days on YouTube. Furthermore, it reached 36.2 million views within 24 hours as the second fastest music video on the video portal. Additionally, Ddu-Du Ddu-Du debuted at number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Square Up at number 40 on the Billboard 200, the highest charting dates by a Korean girl group in the United States. The EP sold over 170,000 copies in South Korea in the month of release.

Their first tour called Blackpink Arena Tour 2018 started on July 24th at Osaka-jō Hall, Osaka, Japan and ended on December 24th at Kyocera Dome Osaka.

On July 26, Blackpink's YouTube channel reached 10 million subscribers and became the first K-pop group channel to be awarded a Diamond Play Button.

On November 10th and 11th, the group held their first concert in Korea called Blackpink [In Your Area] Seoul Concert. The concert was already completely sold out 2 to 3 minutes after the ticket sales opened. The number of visitors for both days was 15,000 people.

On October 19, Dua Lipa released the song Kiss and Make Up with Blackpink.

2019: Kill This Love

In April, Blackpink released their second EP, Kill This Love, containing the single of the same name and the additional tracks Don't Know What to Do, Kick It, Hope Not and a remix of their song Ddu-du Ddu-du.

The Japanese version of Kill This Love was released on October 16th.

Ddu-du Ddu-du's music video hit 1 billion views in November. This makes Blackpink the first K-pop group with a music video that has more than 1 billion views.

2020: Sour Candy and The Album

Blackpink's Blackpink [In Your Area] world tour, which started in Seoul in November 2018, ended on February 22, 2020 in Fukuoka, Japan.

Lady Gaga released Sour Candy, the third single from her new album Chromatica, on May 28, 2020 in collaboration with Blackpink.

On June 26, Blackpink launched their comeback with the pre-release single How You Like That premiering on Youtube. Within 24 hours, the video had 82.4 million views on the platform. With that, the girl group broke the record of BTS, with their single Boy with Luv feat. Halsey had already reached 74.6 million views in April 2019. No one else had reached 100 million clicks as quickly as Blackpink, around 32 hours after publication. Overall, Blackpink set five Guinness World Records: most YouTube views in the first 24 hours of upload for a video, music video and K-pop video, and two records for most viewed premiere.
